Sledding at Patterson Hill

When thinking about winter in the Parc national Kouchibouguac, many think of the ski, snowshoe, and fat bike trails. It is truly a winter wonderland! But did you know that there is sledding and tobogganing at Patterson Hill? We set out to discover Patterson Hill in early January!

All of us have great memories of sledding during a snow day as kids, but it’s just as fun when you get older, with kids or without!

Here are 5 things to know before you go!

1: How to get to Patterson Hill

It is a 2km trek from the Pijeboogwek Waxing Hut, which can be done via hike, snowshoe, or cross-country ski. We chose to hike as the trail was firm and in great condition. The hiking trail is beginner-friendly and flows through a pinemixed-wood forest. Keep your eyes peeled for various birds, squirrels, and animal tracks (which will also your kids busy on the way in)!

2: What to wear

Layers are key! Make sure you wear several layers and dress according to the weather. Remember if you’re warm you can always take layers off, but if you’re cold you can’t add any layers.

Other key things are a warm jacket, snow pants, warm boots, a hat, gloves or mittens, a buff / scarf, and sunglasses if the sun is out! If you are a dare-devil sledder, you may wish to pack a helmet!

3: What to bring

Before heading out, gather up your sledding gear! Whether it’s a crazy carpet, saucer, toboggan, or snow racer, you’ll have a blast. You may also wish to pack snacks, water, and something warm to drink, like a thermos of hot chocolate! You may even wish to bring snacks that you can warm up over the woodstove. One of my favorites is to prepare a grilled cheese at your cabin, wrap it in foil, and warm it up in the Patterson Hut (see below). You could also bring smores or other camping favorites!

4: Patterson Warming Hut

After your trek in, it might be time to warm up and get organized before hitting the slope. The Patterson Warming Hut has a beautiful wood stove and picnic tables.  There is also a Pit Privy(aka outhouse) just in case!  If you get tired out, you can even have a seat in the hut and view the sliding hill via the big windows.

5: One last tip

Enjoy every moment of your day of adventures! There’s so much fun to be had, be sure to take the time to relax, breathe in some fresh air and appreciate the little things!
